From the Principal's desk
Term Two at Robinvale College has started with a flurry of activity that has seen our students enthusiastically engaged in a number of meaningful learning opportunities both at the College and beyond.
Our School Captains and Vice Captains- Claudia Gallo, Nathan Zappia Claudia Pulvermuller and Tanah Burkinshaw proudly represented Robinvale College at the Anzac Day Service at the Robinvale Centopath.
Our VCE students attended the VCE Careers Expo in Melbourne and returned with glowing reports of their experiences and what they learnt about future pathways. In conversations with many of those students, they spoke of learning about new career possibilities they had not yet considered and growing confidence in navigating the City. Thank you to the staff who organised and participated in the excursion. Without staff willingness to give up their personal time to ensure our students can participate in such rich learning opportunities, our students will miss out on these very useful experiences. Please see our Facebook page for some great photos of the excursions.
The College also hosted a visit from Gayle Tierney, MP who officially launched the SuniTAFE Mobile Skills and Jobs Centre. This involved the Minister speaking about the value of this out reach model for helping students in remote areas to develop a better understanding of post-school career options in the local area and beyond. The event was attended by some of the the College’s learning partners and four of our VCAL students- Finn Wescombe, Emma Falvo, Alani Ale and Isabella Camera. The Minister spoke with our students and later commended them on their excellent communication skills.
Staff in the F-2 Community have been working together to create a play-based learning space in the community. There is much evidence that supports the positive impact of play-based learning on the development of language skills in children. By providing an even broader learning experience for the F-2 students, this space will contribute to their learning of necessary Literacy, Numeracy and Social Skills.
On Wednesday, VCAL students hosted a fundraising Barbecue that was well attended by students and staff. These types of activities provide opportunities for VCAL students to demonstrate their learning outcomes and complete their VCAL Certificates. They also create a very positive climate in the school yard. Thanks to the staff and students that made this possible.
As Covid restrictions have eased we have returned to hosting whole Learning Community Assemblies and we hope to be able to hold a whole school assembly in the near future. It was wonderful to visit all the Learning Communities on Monday morning and see well behaved students applauding each other as awards were given for outstanding attendance and the demonstration of the College Values- Respect, Learners, Responsible, Resilient. The College Values are taught through our Social and Emotional Learning Curriculum throughout the year.
A reminder that RAT kits are still available to collect from the front office for the first four weeks of Term 2, for all students. Parents/carers can collect these kits and are encouraged to routinely use them twice a week, before school, to test your child for Covid-19. The use of these kits has been very successful in reducing the spread of Covid-19 amongst our community and together, we can continue to look after the health and safety of all students, staff and parents/carers in our community.
Students will be given the opportunity to complete the Attitudes to School Survey during their classes between Monday 23 May- Friday 10 June. This is an opportunity for students to provide anonymous feedback about their experiences at the College. An information letter about the survey is attached to this newsletter.
Kind regards
Steph Shanahan
PARENT / CAREGIVER / GUARDIAN INFORMATION AND CONSENT LETTER
2022 Student Attitudes to School Survey
Dear Parent / Caregiver / Guardian,
This letter is to inform you about the 2022 Student Attitudes to School Survey (AtoSS), that your child is invited to participate in.
About the survey
We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction and are conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of your school.
The AtoSS is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training to assist your child’s school to gain an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Students will be asked about their thoughts and feelings in relation to their school, their learning, peer and family relationships, resilience, bullying, mental health and wellbeing, physical activity, and life in general.
This year, the AtoSS will be conducted at your school over the period Monday 23rd May to Friday 10th June
What are the benefits?
In our experience, young people enjoy having their say. We have been running this survey for nearly 20 years and it has been invaluable in helping schools understand student views. Your school will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child's schooling experience.
What are the risks?
While we do not anticipate many risks of participation, some students may find some of the survey questions too personal and sensitive in nature. Should you agree for your child to participate, they are still free to skip questions or to withdraw at any stage if the survey makes them upset or uncomfortable.
The survey has been approved by a Human Research Ethics Committee. The questions are selected from validated survey instruments used in Australia and around the world, are strength-based, and tailored for each year level group.
What will my child be asked to do?
Your child will be invited to complete the survey online during class time using a purpose built secure online survey tool. It is important to note that we are not in any way “testing” your child. Please note:
- Student participation in the survey is voluntary and students may withdraw at any time.
- The survey will take around 20-45 minutes to complete.
How is my child’s confidentiality protected?
Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey from their teacher. The student login is an assigned identifier that may be used to link data for statistical and research purposes only. Personally identifiable data will not be recorded in the survey response file. This ensures that the confidentiality of your child’s responses is protected at all times.
How will results be reported?
The survey results will be reported back to the school in an aggregate form throughout the survey period. All survey data that is made available in reports are for groups of students only so that no
individual student can be identified. Data suppression rules are used for schools with low student numbers per year level.
Your school may share the results of the survey with parents, in documents such as the School Annual Report. Options for participation Participation in this survey is voluntary. If you do not wish for your child to do the survey, please opt out via email to your school: Robinvale.co@education.vic.gov.au. Please do so before Monday 23rd May, stating that you wish to opt out of your child’s participation, along with their name and year level. If your school does not receive a Refusal of Consent email from yourself before the survey commencement date mentioned within this letter, it means that you give your consent for your child to participate in the 2022 Attitudes to School Survey. |
A copy of the survey that we are asking your child to complete is available from your child’s school. Please contact the administration office if you would like to see the survey before making your decision about whether you would like your child to participate.
If you would like more information, please speak to your child’s teacher, or contact the Department at school.surveys@education.vic.gov.au.
Yours sincerely,
The Victorian Department of Education and Training

VCE Careers Expo in Melbourne
Tyra Giofrelle: The career expo was good because there were so many options, everyone could find something and gives new ideas to students. The tour of the Australian Catholic University (ACU)was good because the nursing department was interesting and that is what I want to do. The RMIT talk was good because even if you don’t do well, there were other options about how to go to uni.
Alannah Healy: The Jewish Holocaust Museum showed the stories, the kids that died in the Holocaust and I felt overwhelmed but I appreciated seeing the stories. The uni tours was a great opportunity to see what it’s like to go to uni. Ice skating was heaps of fun! (Besides the bruising!)
Gianna Gallace: The nursing program at the ACU was amazing. The Careers Expo was good because there was a lot of opportunities to see the options for careers. I had fun shopping and ice skating.
Sienna Gallace: We had fun in the podcasting workshop because it was something we hadn’t done before.
Adriana Falvo: I liked that we could see all the different types of unis and the business seminar. Visiting RMIT was great because they talked about the courses they offer and the different ways to get there.
Claudia Pulvermueller: I enjoyed being able to spend time with the other Year 12s and I liked hearing the RMIT course lecture because it gave me lots of information I could not get online.
Lost Property
Has your child missed placed their jumper /jacket at school. Please contact the College Office on 50 263 704 as we have an amount of unnamed clothing at the office.
Due to ongoing inappropriate use of the toilets in the 5-8 and 9-12 Learning Communities, teachers are trying to minimise students going to the toilets during class time. It is a reasonable expectation that students in these age groups should not need to go to the toilet during class time if they are making the most of opportunities to go to the toilet before and after school and during recess and lunchtime. Developing these habits is also essential to preparing students for successful participation in the work force beyond school. However, if your child has a medical condition that requires that they be permitted to go to the toilet during class time, please contact Steph Shanahan on 5026 3704 or by email at stephanie.shanahan@education.vic.gov.au and I will organise this information to be discretely communicated to relevant staff.
Overdue Library Books
The Library has a large amount of outstanding overdue books. Please check at home for books your child may have miss placed at home. Students who return lost/overdue books to the library will automatically go into the draw for a $50.00 Scholastic voucher that will enable them to purchase from the Scholastic Book Club
Older students who don’t normally purchase from book club will be able to purchase for another family member. It could be spent on a brother, sister, niece, nephew, cousin or whoever they choose. Mrs. Walsh will also be giving away random spot prizes for books returned.
Robinvale Learning and Community Hub The College Library will be having a Scholastic Book Fair from Tuesday 24TH till Thursday 26TH May the fair will be open from 8-30am – 3-30pm.
ANZAC Day 2022
The College Captains repersented the College at this year's ANZAC Day Service. The Students took part in the march down Perrin St in Robinvale and then placed a wreath at the Cenotaph
Ioan Togo represented Clontarf Academy at this years ANZAC dawn Service
Term 2 Lunchtime Activities
As we begin Term 2 there have been a few changes to the activities on offer. We would like to thank Antionette Tippet for running her mindfulness yoga and relaxation sessions on Mondays as Antionette is not returning to Robinvale College, we will not be running the yoga relaxation on Mondays. Do not worry we have Ms Price stepping in to run the Robotics club in the Science and Language Building and Mr Jensen will run the chess club in M4.
Tuesdays will continue to run as they did in term 1 with Mrs B. taking students through arts and crafts in room 31, as well as, chess in M4 with Mr Jensen and guest teachers for the second half.
Wednesday card games will take place in V4 and will have Mr Mcdonald and Mr Jensen showing you some of their favourite card games. There will be a card tournament during term 2 so keep an eye out for the sigh up sheets around the school.
Thursdays, students will be able to choose between two activities. Table tennis in the upstairs gym with Mr McDonald and board games in M4 with Mr Jensen gives the students the opportunity to be physically active or mentally active.
Get your voices ready for Friday! Ms Yates will return to the Music room and lead students in singing songs as the Karaoke club lights up your lunchtime. If singing is not for you then Mr Jensen will have a pot luck of activities for you to participate in M4.
We would also like to congratulate Cooper Jenner on winning the Term 1 Chess Tournament.
Stay Tuned as we are working on getting more activities and special events for your lunchtime entertainment.
